Description

Victorian Joseph Rodgers & Sons 6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield Large Spear Point Bowie Knife With Stag Horn Scales, German Silver Fittings & Scabbard. Sn 16360 - 16360

Joseph Rodgers & Sons were first established as cutlers at ‘Holy Croft’ Sheffield C1724. By 1780 the firm was firmly established and well known for making quality knives. Having outgrown their Holy Croft premises moved to what was to become their worldwide famous address 6 Norfolk Street Sheffield. Originally making small edged weapons the Company moved into manufacture of large Bowies when American & British Empire markets expanded in the Victorian era (see pages 19 and 248-249 of Joseph Rodgers & Sons By Domenech where Rodger’s Bowies similar to our example are illustrated). This is an excellent Victorian era large spear point bowie made at Rodgers & Sons 6 Norfolk Street premises. The 15 ½” long, bowie has stag horn scales secured by nickel silver pins. One scale has a void nickel silver oval mount. It has a nickel silver finger guard and a 9 ¾” single edged, spear point steel blade, on one side it is marked crisply at the ricasso,' J. Rodgers & Sons, 6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, England'. The reverse is stamped with Rodgers Tutonic type cross trade marks. The blade is undamaged and has just light staining consistent with age. Its original brown leather scabbard has an integral belt loop, nickel silver throat mount & chape which have some service wear. All leather & stitching of the scabbard are intact (similar scabbards are also illustrated on page 248 of Domenech’s book). The price includes UK delivery. Sn 16360
