RARE, 1 OF ONLY 10,000, WW2 & Post War Bay Of Pigs Invasion, Sterile, Landers, Frary and Clark, U.S. Office Of Strategic Command (O.S.S. Special Forces) Stiletto Fighting Knife (Fairbairn Sykes 2nd Pattern FS) & Correct Original Pancake Flipper Scabbard. - 15828

The OSS stiletto is listed in the OSS weapons catalogue produced in June 1944. The knives based on the British FS 2nd pattern dagger were made by the American cutlers Landers, Frary and Clark who supplied 10,000 stilettos and scabbards to the OSS. The knives were used by the OSS during WW2 who co-ordinated espionage activities behind enemy lines and required specialised weaponry for the high operational risk of close combat encounters. Their stock of knives were inherited by the American CIA post WW2 and were reportedly issued to personnel involved in the Bay of Pigs Invasion (see pages 218 – 222 of Flook’s book ‘The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & other Commando Knives’). Connecticut based housewares company Landers, Frary and Clark was well placed to employ its extensive manufacturing capabilities towards the OSS contract. Production began in June 1942. As a measure of wartime austerity, the company used the same stamping tool for their household spatula to make the steel scabbard back. This is still known today amongst the military knife collector community as the "pancake flipper” scabbard. This is an excellent original example of the WW2 OSS Stilletto, fighting knife. It has the correct knurled brass handle (only different from the British 2nd pattern FS in that the knurling on the hilt extends full length to the cross guard on the American version). It has the correct steel cross guard and 170mm double edged blade with medial ridge which is typically slimmer than the FS 2nd pattern. As is normal with special forces equipment there are no manufacturer or unit marks on the stiletto or its scabbard. The stiletto’s leather scabbard with stitched seam is mounted with the correct original green painted pancake flipper steel frame. The flipper section which acts as a belt bar has a small blob of black residue which appears to be the remains of a melted plastic strap which would not have been issued with the scabbard in its original form. The price for this rare OSS piece includes UK delivery. Sn 15828
