Description

Large Edwardian English Magistrates / Mayor’s Decorated Tip Staff To William P Spalding Mayor Of Cambridge Dated 1908 - 1909. Sn 11729 - 11729

The English gentleman William P. Spalding a stationer, Alderman and Justice of the Peace (JP) resided in Sidney Street Cambridge. Spalding was famous for producing a street directory annually for Cambridge from 1874 to the onset of the Second World War. He was Mayor of Cambridge between 1908 & 1909 and served a second term in office 1909-1910 (A contemporary portrait of Spalding in Mayoral robes wearing his chain of office is illustrated in image 2). The tip staff is one of the earliest forms of Government authority, carried by the early Constables/ Watchmen and Magistrates as signs of their authority and right to enforce law. This is an excellent JP’s Tip Staff to Spalding. The staff is made from a light weight wood painted with colourful decoration including The King’s Crown with ‘ER’ monogram (Edward VII Rex), Heraldic Arms and wording ‘Alderman W.P. Spalding J.P. Mayor Of Cambridge 1908-9’ (illustrated inset in image 2). The staff measures 27” in length with a grooved grip section. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 11729
