Liege Belgium Pire Antwerp Velo-Dog Type Closed Frame 6mm Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Hammerless Revolver With Folding Trigger. A 1060 - A 1060

The Munitions factory PIRE of Antwerp, officially known under the name ‘Establishments J Pire and C°’, was created in 1885. Originating in Liège, his father Nicolas was an arms manufacturer with the Belgian army. Period adverts of the time show that Pire was making velo dog type revolvers similar to ours (a period company advert with an illustration of a pistol similar to ours can be seen inset in image 3). The Velo-Dog pistol was a pocket revolver originally created in France by Charles-François Galand in the late 19th century as a defence for cyclists against dog attacks. The name is a portmanteau of "velocipede" and "dog". Surviving examples vary considerably in appearance. All have short barrels. Many of the weapons have a trigger that folds into the body of the weapon when not in use. This is an original closed frame 6 shot, Velo-Dog type revolver has a fluted cylinder and 1 ¾” octagonal barrel (5 ¾” overall). The rifled bore is clean. The pistol has finely chequered gutta percha hard rubber grips with clamshell devices. It is side gate loading and it's double action only firing mechanism works correctly. The pistol has an internal hammer and concealed folding trigger to prevent snagging on clothing. It has a lever safety lever to the rear of the action and captive swivel ejector rod. The rod arm ihas a number which appears to be ‘310’. The frame is stamped with ‘P*’ within circle most likely the manufacturer mark of ‘PIRE’. As an obsolete calibre, antique, weapon no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. The price includes UK delivery. A 1060
