RiflesLever ActionUsed£ 1,095
A nice condition Westley Richards Martini made for the ZAR republic. This one is not dated so am assuming that it was produced in the late 1890s. Liege proofed as the pictures show.
Action is nice and tight, I have tried to show the bore condition with a light but it has not turned out so well but it looks very clean and shows little wear. Appears to have been proofed recently, I have owned it for about 3 years and have held it as a section 58 so have not shot it so you are looking and potentially buying on the understanding that I have no knowledge of its fitness to shoot and it will be sold as a Section 58 curio.
The sides of the action have caught some pitting as shown and the keeper screw for the action retaining pin is missing, the bayonet bar/end band is WD marked so is likely not original other than that I would say it is a very good example. On the underside of the butt is is stamped PEL Elgee - a little research has revealed the following :
'Elgee, P. E. L. (Capt. R. Berks R.)—
S. African War. 1899-1900. — Advance on Kimberley,
including action at Magersfontein. Operations in
the Orange Free State, Feb. to May 00, including
operations at Paardeberg (17 to 26 Feb.) ; actions at
Poplar Grove, Dreifontein, Houtnek (Thoba Moun-
tain), Vet River (5 and 6 May), and Zand River.
Operations in the Transvaal in May and Jun. 00,
including action near Johannesburg (slightly
wounded). Queen's medal with 4 clasps'
Maybe he picked this up on one of the above campaigns, who knows?
Collection preferred in the Midlands area as viewing is highly recommended. Happy to do more pictures.
