~ Mid 19th Century Japanese Swordstick With Enamel Grip ~
Here we have a wonderful example of an exquisite swordstick in the Japanese style poplar after the 1860’s among the wealthier Japanese as well as the Europeans and Americans that liked the style.
The cane is topped with an enamel scene of butterflies and cherry blossom trees, both things that feature heavily in Japanese art.
The blade itself is concealed within the cane and held by two catches. The blade is a short cut and thrust blade with a rounded sword grip. The most interesting part of this blade is the fact that it appears to have the remains of wither a real hamon from clay tempering or from acid etching.
