    Netherlands Rampart gun

    Other GunsUsedTradeNetherlands
On Auction : This is a very old (c. 1670 to 1680) and massive (5.2 kg) musket from Holland/Sweden. The barrel has an exceptionally large diameter of 21.6 mm (8 bullets/pound) and such calibres were used by both Swedish and Russian forces until around 1720 (the end of the Great Northern War); after which they became obsolete on the battlefield. It should be noted that the main producer of large calibre guns during the 16th and 17th century was Holland. It is possible that this gun could have been deployed in the Scanian War (1675 to 1679), or the Great Northern War (1700 to 1721), or both. The banana shaped lock is large and of early form, circa 1670 to 1680. See: https://digitaltmuseum.se/011024386861/muskot for a similarly dated infantry musket with the same type of banana lock (prior to percussion conversion). The lock does not have an internal bridle; which is another indicator of the substantial age of this gun. The lock face has some unknown marks that could be some form of Nordic/Scandinavian. It has a well made iron trigger guard with a large opening for the trigger finger; most likely so the gun can be fired whilst wearing heavy gloves in cold weather. The curl at the end of the trigger also indicates considerable age.The stock is original and has received some solid repair work to the wrist and fore-end; the additional piece of walnut at the fore-end has been carefully shaped to fit over what remained of the existing stock forward of the stock entry thimble, without damaging it. Additionally, a small piece of walnut has been inlaid in the top of the wrist, to replace an old repair where a screw and plate held the wrist together. These pieces along with the former end thimble are shown in the photographs and will be included. Floral carvings and scrolls decorate the butt and the stock around the barrel tang. The dark finish in the oiled walnut has not been touched, other than the application of a small amount of wood oil and beeswax. The iron nose-cap, front two thimbles and the patchbox cover are not original. Can be easily converted back to flintlock. Will not ship outside of mainland Europe....Read full description
