Original British WW1 Medieval Halberd Pole Arm Head Form Improvised Trench Fighting Axe / War Hammer. (ED 2217 Edged Weapons & Swords) - ED 2217

During WW1 Military Units on both sides improvised their own trench warfare weapons which they saw as being of more use than issued weapons, when fighting hand to hand. This excellent unusual improvised British trench fighting axe in the form of a medieval halberd head (A halberd also called halbard, halbert or Swiss voulge is a two-handed pole weapon that came to prominent use during the 14th and 15th centuries). This is not a decorative replica of a Medieval halberd axe head but was definitely made for use in close quarter battle. Usually a halberd would have be attached to a long pole but the full tang hilt of ours has WW1 period composite scales secured by copper rivets to allow use in confined spaces. The axe made of 6mm thick steel, measures 7 ½” from the broadest part of the cutting edge to the pointed end of the armour / helmet piercing pointed hammer head. The sharpened cutting edge of the axe head measures 5 ¾” from tip to tip and the underside of the blade has a notch most likely used to rip open the armour of a fallen enemy (similar to how a can opener operates). The overall length of the axe is 11 ½”. The axe weighs a hefty 2lbs 1oz. The price for this hard to find reminder of the brutal nature of trench warfare includes UK delivery. ED 2217
