VERY RARE, MINT, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA U.S. Army Springfield Model 1861 Parker Miller ‘Trap Door’ .58 RF (56-56 Spencer) Calibre Rifle Dated 1864 By Parker Snow & Co. Sn 11900 - 11900

This is a near mint original early Parker-Miller ‘Trap Door’ rifle produced in the American Civil War era for the U.S. Military. The Union Army placed an order of 2,000 Springfield M 1861 rifles with the Parker Miller trap door breech towards the end of the Civil War. When the War ended the U.S Government decided to adopt the Erskin-Allin trap door system & cancelled the Miller order. Miller sued the U.S. War Dept, Erskin-Allin & Springfield for breach of copyright. The last of these rifles were produced in 1867 and not many of these rifles survive in 100% complete condition. This example in 100% complete near mint condition has all original wood stock and the metal work is excellent & clean. It measures 58” overall with a 39” round steel barrel which has a clean bore with well defined rifling. The weapon is fitted with block and blade fore sight and notched plate rear sight. It has a heavy military hammer, steel butt plate stamped ‘US’ (Army), sling swivels, steel barrel bands & fore end block and original steel cleaning rod. The side plate is marked with the American Eagle and 'U.S’ together with ‘1864’ date and ‘Parker Snow & Co Meridan Conn’. The inside of the breech is numbered ‘635’. The trap door is stamped ‘WH&GW Miller Patent May 23 1865’ together with ‘Meridan Manfg Co Meridan Conn’. The weapon’s loading, cocking and firing actions work perfectly. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre antique firearm no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 11900
