Richard Johnston an English cutler, took over the business of John Bland (died 1791), and Robert Foster (died 1798). After John Bland died in 1791, Robert Foster and Richard Johnston moved premises, just one shop away, from 70 St. James's Street, to 68 St.James's St. The two men worked together until Robert Foster's death in 1798. The cartouche on this sword gives an address of 68 St. James's Street. After Foster's death, Richard Johnston took on another shop, then having the address of 38 & 68 St. James's Street. The Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre was used primarily by British Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade is remembered today as one of the best of its time and has been described as the finest cutting sword ever manufactured in quantity. Officers of the famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments and the "flank" Companies of Line Regiments adopted these Swords (The Hit Peninsular War, Book & TV series Sharpe's Rifles featured this pattern of Sword). Yeomanry Cavalry officer’s often purchased their own variants of the 1796 sabre from British Cutlers. A Yeomanry Cavalry Officer’s presentation quality 1796 type sword with similar shaped brass hilt made C1800 is illustrated on page 93 of World Swords by Withers. This is an original British Yeomanry Cavalry Officer’s Private Purchase 1796 Light Cavalry Type Sabre & Scabbard By R. Johnston Late Bland & Foster in good condition. It has a single edged, fullered 28” Sabre blade. The blade has staining consistent with age and is fitted with original leather hilt washer. It has the correct 1796 pattern shape hilt with brass cross guard which has rounded langets, knuckle guard, curved pommel and leather bound wood ribbed grip. The grip has areas of surface wear to be expected. There are no maker or date marks on the sword. The Sabre is complete with its original steel scabbard with 2 hanging rings. The scabbard’s steel has aged to a rich plum colour. The scabbard has a nicely engraved manufacturer roundel ‘R. Johnston Late Bland & Foster Sword Cutler & Belt Makers To His Majesty 68 St James’s Street London’. The price for this Napoleonic Wars era Sword with scabbard includes UK delivery. Sn 18438
