This revolver was manufactured by Deane Adams & Deane No 30 King William Street, London Bridge, Circa 1851-1856. After the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in the purpose-built Crystal Palace in Hyde Park a wider selection of revolvers became available and many officers purchased their own to take with them to the Crimea. The British Adams revolvers were amongst the most popular due to the five chambers which could fire five shots rapidly and available in a range of calibres. Captain Joshua Crosse of the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) who used the largest calibre .54 Adams revolver during the Crimean War (1854-56). Wrote to its inventor, Robert Adams, following the Battle of Inkerman (1854). Where he was wounded and surrounded by Russians quoted " I then found the advantages of your pistol over that of Colonel Colt's, for had I to cock before each shot I should have lost my life. With yours, having only to pull the trigger, I was able to shoot four Russians, and therefore save my life. I should not have had time to cock, for they were too close to me, being only a few yards from me. So close that I was bayoneted through the thigh immediately after shooting the fourth man". The gunmaker's name Deane Adams & Deane No 30 King William Street, London Bridge engraved on the 6 inch octagonal barrel. (foresight missing on the barrel) Adams Patent engraved on the frame. The serial number 13333 engraved on the barrel and the frame. Finely chequered grips. Finely engraved butt-cap. In very good overall condition retaining almost all its original blued finish. In good working order. An excellent example of the type of weapon carried around the time of the Crimean war. Overall length 13 inches. Ref 1326.
