Description

A rare brass framed 18th century flintlock tinder-box or tinder-lighter. Circa 1780-1800. This is a genuine brass framed tinder lighter of the type used by early settlers and travellers during the 1780's-1830 era. The tinder that was used was usually open weave flax or other material that would be easily combustible, this was kept dry and ignited with gun-powder when put into the brass pan within the frame of the pistol. The side plate is crudely engraved F. G. COOKE and is possibly the original owners name. The frame is fitted with its original steel frizzen and a very strong spring and the flint still sparks in exactly the same way it would have done originally. Some very minor dings and scratches to the wooden grip otherwise in good condition and in working order. Length approx 6 inches. Ref 2509.
