Marked on top of the 28 inch round/octagonal barrel forward of the rear sight WINCHESTER’S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT. KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866.OCTOBER.16.1860 and CAL 40-60 behind the rear sight. The tang is marked MODEL 1876. Ladder rear sight, marked from 2-10. Flip up folding front sight. Sliding breech dust cover and half length tube magazine. Varnished walnut stock. The Winchester 1876 also known as the Centennial Model as it was introduced to celebrate the American Centennial Exposition. The Model 1876 earned a reputation as a durable and powerful hunting rifle that was also used by the Canadian North-West Mounted Police and the Texas Rangers. Theodore Roosevelt was a collector of Winchesters (used for big game hunting) and he ordered his first Winchester in the late summer of 1881, possibly to celebrate the publication of his second book, The Naval War of 1812. He then proceeded to ordered a pair of consecutively numbered Model 1876s and these guns would be similar in composition to nearly every one of the next 20 Winchesters that he ordered. Apache warrior Geronimo after his surrender in 1886, an 1876 Winchester was found in his possession. Overall length 48 inches. In very good condition retaining much of it's original blueing with no visible wear or use to the walnut stock. A superb example of a Winchester 1876 Centennial model big game hunting rifle.
