Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 2786. A very rare 17th century short sword from the time of the English Civil War (circa 1642–1651). Fitted with a very strange and unusual 24 inch flamboyant blade which is also serrated along one edge to inflict maximum damage. This is a sword which could possibly have been made specifically for use on Witches or others for torture & interrogation purposes. The very simple cross-guard made of iron with matching iron pommel and a plain wooden grip. Double edged flamboyant blade, length 24 inches. Overall length 29 inches. The sword is in fairly good condition but with some light rust.
Note; This sword is not long enough or heavy enough to have been used in battle so the most interesting explanation put forward is that it was most probably made for torture/interogation purposes but we can find no documented evidence to that effect.
