A very unusual and rare Revolutionary War Era Dragoon's or horse-mans Basket Hilt sword of unusual pattern. This sword is similar to other horse-mans or dragoons swords circa 1750-1780 but has a brass basket guard comprised of individual bars and is of rather odd construction and style. Original solid brass grip fitted with a thumb-ring and a massive ovoid brass pommel. The brass guard has at some time been completely covered in silver, now polished off but traces remaining, (please see photos). Manufactured probably circa 1730-1770. The very wide (1.75 inches) blade is 32 inches long, has been well-cleaned and polished during its life, hence the slightly lower price. Overall length is 38 inches. This and similar types of horseman's or Dragoons swords are known to have seen service during the American Revolutionary War circa 1775-1783.This sword possibly belonged to a man of very high rank due to it having been silver covered in the past. Ref 3000. If you wish to purchase this item please visit our website andrewbottomley.com where you can pay by credit/debit card or bank transfer at no extra charge. Established 1968.
