Unusual shaped motifs to the engraved basket guard showing monsters or dragons on either side of the King's head. The guard engraving is very deep, and clear. Mortuary swords like this one normally show an engraved head of King Charles the First of England, this example does with the addition of the Dragons. Double edged blade 32 inches in length struck with an armourer's mark of an Orb & Sceptre. Another interesting feature of this rare sword is the additional King's face shown on both sides of the pommel, again between two dragons. We believe that the dragon is probably a Welsh motif. Overall length 39 inches. The grip wire is complete with its Turk's head bindings at top and bottom of the grip. The basket guard with one bar to the guard restored (an almost invisible repair), otherwise in very good condition. Ref 3005.
