Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 3098. A fine antique silver hallmarked figural crocodile walking cane. Circa 1880. The 36 inch wooden walking cane fitted on a figure of a 4 inch silver crocodile with full British silver hallmarks. (Silver marks are a little too worn to decipher the date letter). The crocodile stretched along a bank patiently waiting for it's prey. Intricately carved in silver with green stone eyes (one is missing). One slight crease to the silver ferule otherwise in good condition. For the past couple of centuries walking canes were carried not as a walking aid but as an ornament and an indication of the owner's wealth and status. The battle of the Nile in 1798 was the date when crocodile decoration started to become popular in Great Britain with many silver objects decorated with a crocodile. A gentleman may have a number of canes to suit every occasion. A rare and decorative antique walking cane. Ref 3098.
