A superb Irish .75 cal percussion travelling pistol made by W. & J, Riby. Circa 1840. William & John Rigby had a workshop 24 Suffolk Street, Dublin, circa 1824-1858. The 9 inch very fine damascus sighted barrel engraved on top Dublin. The makers name W & J Rigby engraved on the lock plate. Very fine chequered Rigby style fish-tail grip. Oblong escutcheon fitted to the rear of the barrel tang. Captive swivel ramrod and decorative engraved trigger guard. Nice crisp action. In very good condition. A fine example of a percussion travelling pistol from the 1840's. In the 17th through to the early 19th century in Ireland, acts of robbery were often part of a tradition of Irish resistance to British authority and the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland. Highwaymen who harassed the British authorities were known as tories, Later in the century, they became known as rapparees. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried by a traveller to protect themselves during these worrying times. Overall length 15 inches. Ref 3216. An extremely fine pistol.
