Description

Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 3271. A scarce original Scottish Dirk in very good condition. Complete in its original leather scabbard. The scabbard mounts are made of nickel silver and engraved with a very simple traditional Scottish design of Heather. Probably mid 19th century. The Pommel set in the top with a Cairngorm stone, the dirk is complete with its matching bi-knife and fork, which also have their Cairngorm stones set into the hilts. The black wooden hilt finely carved overall with Celtic basket work design. Complete in its leather scabbard with matching nickel silver mounts. Single edged blade showing signs of use, the back edge of blade is scalloped. No visible makers marks. Blade length is 12 inches. Overall length in scabbard is 18 inches. This dirk belonged to a John Fraser and his name is engraved on the top mount. The first Fraser we could find documented to appear in Scottish history was in about 1160 when Simon Fraser held lands at Keith in East Lothian. Five generation later during the Scottish wars of Independence the Frasers fought alongside Robert the Bruce and Alexander Fraser of Cowie even married Bruce's sister. During the the 14th century the Clan Fraser split into two separate clans the Lowland Frasers of Philorth and the Frasers of Lovat. The Fraser clans are probably most famous for their part in the battle of Culloden (16th April 1746) where they fought alongside Bonnie Prince Charlie. Ref 3271.
