Probably Italian circa 1550-1600. Shaped and pierced iron pommel with a plain down drooping cross-guard made in one piece. The wide double-edged blade is marked with an unusual armourer's mark at the forte (please see photo) and is of a flattened wide diamond section which tapers gradually towards a good strong point. In remarkably good un-corroded condition with a pleasing patina. Blade is 27 inches in length and 1.75 inches wide at forte. This is an outstanding and extremely unusual example of a 16th century knightly short sword or Main-Gauche. Sword shows no corrosion at all. The grip is made of wood and would originally have had a wire grip covering. Overall length 33 inches. Ref 3877.
