A rare iron barrelled English Flintlock coaching Blunderbuss with a top spring bayonet, made by H W Mortimer circa 1790-1810. Iron barrel with swamped muzzle aprox 14 inches long, set on top with a spring loaded folding bayonet. Brass trigger guard, sideplate and butt-plate. The stock inset at the wrist with an oval escutcheon bearing an old family crest and the letter D (the engraving now very faint). Condition is very good overall with some very minor signs of normal wear and use. Action works fine. Overall length 29 inches. This blunderbuss could quite easily have been issued and carried on one of the mail coaches of the era. A very scarce and much sought after item. Henry William Mortimer had a workshop at 89 Fleet Street, London from circa 1780 - 1835 when the business became known as H.W. Mortimer and Sons. H.W. Mortimer was issued with a Royal Warrant for supplying weapons to the Royal family and was probably best known for supplying weapons to The Royal Mail Coaches. Probably one of the most revered gun makers of the period. Ref 8297. This is an obsolete antique item and is sold as a collectors item only. No Licence is required in the United Kingdom.
