Theophilus Richards gunmaker's business started in the late 1700s. His son William Westley Richards helped petition the British Parliament to establish the Birmingham proof house. The makers name "Theop Richards" engraved on the side plate and the stand of arms on the other side of the frame. Screw off 1.5 inch barrel, sliding top safety and drop down concealed trigger. Two British proof marks stamped to the underside of the breech. Flat sided walnut grips. Overall length 6 inches. Top jaw screw is a later replacement, otherwise in good working order and condition. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried during the late 18th century by an English gentleman or an officer as a personal protection weapon. Ref 9552.
