Circa 1837. The 14 inch very heavy octagonal barrel fitted with a white metal fore-sight and engraved on top W. GILBERT ROCHESTER. N.Y. Walnut stock with iron butt-cap and a wide iron trigger guard. Wooden ramrod (probably a replacement). The main spring and percussion hammer are both mounted on the outside of the iron lock-plate. This type of pistol is often referred to as a side slapper or mule ear. This style of pistol began to appear around the 1820's. In reasonably good condition but with a crack through the grip. Approx .56 calibre. Action in working order. Overall length 19 inches. A very rare type of typically American pistol. Ref 9575.
