C1840 English Sale Shipston Brass Framed 40 Bore, Percussion Pistol With Screw Off Steel Barrel & Folding Sprung Bayonet. Sn 14932 - 14932

This is an excellent brass framed percussion pocket pistol with folding bayonet made C 1840. It's round steel screw off barrel is 3 ¼” in length (7 ¾” overall with bayonet closed, 10 ¼” overall with bayonet open). The barrel is unscrewed by placing a specially made tool into notched cut into the muzzles of the barrels (we do not have the tool but the barrel can be unscrewed manually). The smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The under side of the barrel and frame have black powder proofs. It is fitted with a 2 ¼” folding triangular section blade bayonet. The bayonet block has a sprung steel release button to allow the bayonet to fold into the closed position. When closed the tip of the bayonet fits into a notch in the front of the trigger guard. The bayonet is released and flicks open by pulling the trigger guard to the rear. Its brass frame is nicely engraved on both sides with a banners & arms motifs. On the left side the motif bears the maker’s or retailer’s name 'Sale Shipston'. The trigger guard is engraved with a foliate design. It has a steel slide safety & Dolphin hammer. The pistol's bag shaped Walnut grip is undamaged and has chequered panels on the back edge. The back edge of the grip is inlaid with a void German silver escutcheon. The pistol cocks and dry fires perfectly and the sprung bayonet mechanism functions perfectly. The price for this desirable pistol worthy of further research re the maker or retailer includes UK delivery. NB as an antique percussion pistol no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 14932
