An original WW2 dated Japanese Officer's Sword. The Shin-Gunto Katana’s blade has a cutting edge of 26”. The tang is signed on both sides with crisp Smith’s name & date in Japanese script characters. The signatures have been translated and the sword assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His hand written notes accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “A Shin Gunto army officer’s sword, murato bar stock steel oil quenched blade with both showa and miniature seki arsenal stamps which mean not hand forged. Hamon put on when polished using stones. Signed Masa Nori (smith) & dated November 1944. He was an arsenal smith working late war. In good untouched condition. Some damage to interior of hilt around locking catch. Complete with sarute & tank tassel Lt / Captain level. For reference Fuller & Gregory Sword Smiths pa/list/no No.158/262. See also John Slough’s book Modern Swordsmiths of Japan list no’s 174 page 97. Noro (family name) Masa Nori”. Rubbings of the tang also accompany the sword. The binding over the shagreen handle is complete and intact and all the fittings are original, correct and present (illustrated). It has a heavy brass tsuba and push button scabbard retaining clip (does not lock into scabbard). The sword is complete with its metal scabbard which has a single hanging ring. The scabbard retains much of its original paint finish. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 16959
