Japanese Officer's Shin-Gunto Seki Arsenal Blossom Stamp Katana Sword With Master Smith Signed Tang ‘Kato Jumye’ (Real Name Zennosuke), Scabbard & Expert Assessment Notes. Sn 17801 - 17801
An original WW2 Japanese Officer's Sword. The sword has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His hand written notes and blade drawings accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “Shin Gunto high grade Showa To blade made by Master Smith ‘Kato Jumye’ real name Zennosuke worked in Seki (Mino) rsenal in Nosshu province when he made this using the art name Jumyo. He made high quality blades for the army. With Blossom stamp it cannot be Gendaito. It is not a typical seki sword. The shape is Muromachi period, very elegant looks like a Koto Tachi with long point (Kissaki). . It is 35 ¼” length cutting edge of 26 ¾”. His temper is Ko-Notare with gunome (peaks) in places and some detached areas of Hamon. Blade has 50% old polish with old finger rust obscuring the grain which is probably Nashiji (pear skin grain). He entered a blade making contest in 1941 Shinsaku NiHonto Denrenkai where he reached 2nd seat (Qasi national Sword Smith) Kuri Hara Aki Hide ran a big school to train Smiths and gave him the title of Jokono Retsu (Master Smith). This was probably a private purchase blade because of its quality and non-conformist shape. Needing polish to bring out beauty of work. Blade is fitted with a pre war quality Tsuka & Tsuba of Handachi style hilt & Mokko (4 lobed) Tachi. Tsuba in Sen Toku (brass) with Shakudo insert plates (Seppa)”. The sword has its lacquered wood scabbard with single brass hanging ring. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 17801
