QUALITY* VERY RARE*PRE-WAR*PRESENTED TO SHINTO MINATA GAWA SHRINE ON SITE OF FAMOUS BATTLE*Japanese Katana Long Sword Blade Smith Signed Tang ‘San Uki Kuni Ju Baba Aki Tsugu Kin Saku Kore’ Wood Shira Saya Resting Mounts, Cloth Carry Bag Expert Assessment - ED 2456

This ancient blade Japanese katana sword blade has been assessed by UK based Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his assessment, translation of the tang signature, rubbing of the tang and illustration of the blade accompanies this item. In exerts from the assessment he states ‘A gift to a shrine. There was a forge established in 1940 by the Imperial Japanese navy to make Officer’s swords in the grounds of shrine in Kobe. This sword was made earlier than 1940 and made as a present to the shrine. Smiths usually did their best work for presentation pieces. Gendaito a very big blad copied from the huge blades carried in the 14th century. Done in Bizen workmanship. This man was listed as a superior master by his teacher Aki Hide where he used the name ‘San Uki Kuni Ju Baba Aki Tsugu Kin Saku Kore’ on his blades. He later became an army approved smith. Changed his art name to Baba Tsugu Kiyo, noted in reference books at this time as maker of high grade gendaito. As found in an old collection. Needs full polish to show superb workmanship. This would get Hozon paper from japan. Small rust patches & scratching and small chips to edge otherwise healthy, a rare sword by good 1930’s maker’. In his illustration of the blade and tang characteristics he translates the profuse signatures and markings on both sides of the tang identifying the smith as previously described , also ‘10th year Showa era 1935 early spring & Minato Gawa shrine site of battle where Kusonoki Masa Shige died’. He also states ‘cutting edge is just under 29” total length just under 37” very tight forging. Kissaki 33mm. Hamon is gunome midare based on nioi crystals with nie sprinkled, very vibrant’. A later cloth carry back with draw string also comes with the sword. The price includes UK delivery. ED 2456
