St. Etienne 1777 Type French Infantry Musket Muzzleloader .69 Rifles

An unusually long barrelled St. Etienne marked military musket, of the ‘Charleville 1777’ type, late Napoleonic or early Restoration Period. The musket has a walnut three quarter stock, and measures 63" overall, with a barrel length of 48 ", at .69" or 14 bore. The lock is marked to the St. Etienne factory. The barrel has proof marks from the Belgian arms factory at Liege. Both the barrel and the inside of the lock are impressed with a matching number, 'C478', as is the inside of the woodwork, indicating that they have always been matched. There are various ordnance marks to both the metal parts and the stock, including a rack number, which matches a faint mark to the steel buttplate, and armourer's stamp to the woodwork. The stock is in fantastic condition, with only a few very minor bumps, but nowhere near what would be expected in a piece of this age, with no loss anywhere. The cut out for the lock is very clean, and there are further maker's marks inside the stock. The outstanding feature of this gun is the exceptionally long barrel, which is held in place by three steel barrel bands. It comes complete with the original ramrod, again with ordnance marks on, to the full 48" length of the barrel. The barrel bands disengage and slip off smoothly, as intended, and the entire musket shows signs of having been maintained carefully throughout it's life. The action is strong, and holds on the half and full cock....Read full description
