RARE, American Wild West Era J. Stevens & Co Chicopee Falls 1864 Patent Single Shot .30 Rim Fire Obsolete Calibre, Brass Framed Break Action Derringer. Sn 16825 - 16825

Joshua Stevens was born on 10th September 1814. For 26 years, Stevens worked for other New England gun makers including Samuel Colt, Eli Whitney, Cyrus Allen, Edwin Wesson, and the Mass. Arms Co. In 1864, he obtained patent No. 44123 for a breech-loading derringer that became the basis for all but two of the 14 Stevens single-shot pistols. Stevens started his factory in Chicopee Falls, Mass. on the north side of the Chicopee River. It was located in an old grist mill and the company’s name was “J. Stevens & Co.” The factory started when the Civil War was close to an end. The company was a world leader in the arms market until the early 1900s. This is a rare to find J.Stevens 1864 patent brass framed single shot derringer. It has a 3 ½” round steel barrel which is stepped to octagonal at the breech & measures 6 ¼” overall. The barrel is numbered ‘14726’ and the top of the barrel has very faint manufacturer & patent detail ‘J. Stevens & Co Chicopee Falls Mass Pat. Sept 6 1864’. The bore has crisp rifling & staining / residue consistent with age & use. It has a sheathed trigger and brass blade foresight. The rear sight consists of a notch in the hammer. Its American Rosewood grips are undamaged. The derringer is broken for loading by depression of a steel button on the left side of the frame. Its loading and firing actions work correctly. The price for this rare Wild West era derringer includes UK delivery. NB As an antique obsolete calibre derringer no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 16825...Read full description
