    ~ M1907 (Puerto-Seguro 1907) Pattern Spanish Cavalry Sword #1 ~

This is the M-1907 pattern sword. It’s a sword pattern that came into use near the end of the use of cavalry in modern warfare but also a type of sword considered near perfect because of its design and efficiency.

Around the beginning of the 20th century the military's of Europe all came to the decision that the cavalry sabre was best made into a straight thrusting weapon, seeing that the curved cavalry sabres, like those used by the British, left debilitating injuries but the thrusting cavalry sword like those famously used by the French, was a killing weapon.

Like most armies at the time the swords went into development and by 1907 the Captain Louis de Carvajal, Marquis of Puerto-Seguro designed this. This is Spanish equivalent of the 1908 British pattern cavalry sword or the American Patton sword.

Designed in 1907 this sword didn’t actually enter mass production until 1918, seeing action in both the wars in North Africa where it was used in the last great Spanish cavalry charge in Morocco, 1921 and on both sides of the Spanish Civil War.

The sword has a long fullered blade and a cup hilt guard. The grip is slightly off centre of the blade almost forming a pistol like grip for more control of the tip.

The rim of the cup guard has been folded to strengthen the edge.

The handle scales are a dark hardwood, smooth and almost flush with the bolts rather than the usual cross hatched pattern.

The construction of the sword seems to be screw based, with a threaded section on the end of the tang screwing into the pommel.

The scabbard is also steel and has held up rather well, the fitting is still in place but missing the ring.

The ricasso is stamped ‘ARTILLERIA’ meaning it was made at the ordinance factory, the opposite side bearing the serial number ‘14806’.

On the front of the cup hilt is the Spanish Insignia showing this blade was made pre 1921.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The overall length of the sword in its scabbard is 43 inches (109 cm).

The scabbard is 37 inches (94 cm).

The blade length is 33 inches (84 cm).

From pommel to blade the guard is 6 inches (15 cm).

From the backwards rim of the cup to the forward it is 6 inches (15 cm).

    The weight is 1.55 Kg.

    ~ Condition ~

The scabbard has some dents and surface rust.

The fittings are all still tight, the blade and guard don’t wobble and the construction is still sturdy.

The inside of the cup has extensive rust whilst the outside has surface rust and pitting with the insignia still visible.

The blade has slight patina, along but no nicks or dents and all in all very good condition for a service blade.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £18 or it can be pick up from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
