SUPERB, RARE, 1ST YEAR OF PRODUCTION, Victorian 1856 Pattern British Ordnance Marked Enfield Tower .58" Bore Percussion Cavalry Carbine Dated 1857 With Nipple Protector & Chain. A 573 - A 573 / 11807

The 1856 Pattern Cavalry carbine was set in production in 1857 [the date of this rifle] and intended as a precursor to the adoption of a breech leading carbine. It was on general issue to British Cavalry units and saw service in India from the India Mutiny onwards (see De Witt Bailey p125). This is a rare weapon as only limited number were made, perhaps about 25,000, the exact number produced is unknown (see British Soldiers Firearm p109 penultimate para). These weapons were also purchased on behalf of the Confederacy during the American Civil War and were popular with their Cavalry Troopers. This is a superb original, 1857 dated British Enfield [Tower Lock] made P1856 Cavalry Carbine. It has all original undamaged wood work & metal work throughout. It has a heavy military percussion dolphin hammer and the lock plate is crisply stamped Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & 'Tower' (Enfield) with '1857' date. Its 21" rifled barrel is clean with just light staining but no pitting and is .58" bore. The carbine measures 37" overall. The top of the barrel is stamped with crisp Victorian proof/inspection marks and the weapon has other ordnance inspection marks on the frame and saddle bar. It has a fixed rear sight and additional graduated 2 leaf flip up rear sight graduated to 200 & 300 yards. It also has a small block and blade fore sight. It has the correct under barrel captive swivel ramrod with end cap. The carbine also has brass fore end block, trigger guard with extended tang & butt plate. It is complete with steel saddle bar with ring and nipple protector with brass chain. It cocks & dry fires perfectly as it should. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion Carbine no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. A 573
