1860 Dated British Military Enfield Tower 2 Band .577 Calibre Percussion Rifle Regiment Marked ‘V NL 434’ To The Loyal North Lancashire Volunteers. Sn 13765 - 13765

The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was formed in 1881 as part of the Cardwell reforms of the British Army. Its title changed to The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) in 1921. The Regiment was formed initially with two battalions, the 1st Battalion being created from the former 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot, and the 2nd from the former 81st (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers). The Regimental Depot was at Fulwood Barracks, Preston, creating a link which has continued unbroken to the present day. The Regiment recruited primarily from the towns of Central Lancashire, including Preston, Chorley, Bolton and Wigan. In 1859 a scare a war with France swept the country, exposing the inability of the small peacetime Regular Army to defend Great Britain as well as the vast colonial Empire. The widespread popular demand for additional volunteer forces did not at first find favour with the Government of the day, but the Ministry finally gave way and on 25 May 1859 sanctioned the formation of corps of Rifle Volunteers. Lancashire responded with particular enthusiasm to the call for volunteers and by the end of 1860 over seventy local Infantry units had been raised. This is an original Enfield 2-band Percussion Rifle in .577" calibre. It is stamped on the side plate, ‘Tower 1860’ and Crown VR (Victoria Regina) together with ordnance inspection mark. The top of the barrel has inspection marks. It has all original woodwork with steel butt plate, original ramrod, ladder rear sight, block and blade fore sight, sling swivels & bayonet lug. The butt plate tang is Regiment marked ‘V NL’ to the Loyal North Lancashire Volunteers together with weapon number ‘434’. The barrel has a clean bore with crisp rifling.
