    UNIQUE**1819-1839 British Enfield Tower Baker Pattern / East India Company (EIC), Brown Bess .75” Bore Muzzle Loading Flintlock Musket, Buff Leather Sling & Socket Bayonet By S.Hill. Sn 17469:1 - 17469:1

    This is an original Baker Pattern Brown Bess flintlock musket. Labels that accompany this musket state ‘This is the last and most sophisticated of the military Bess. This particular individual example is unique. The lock engraving indicates ownership by the King but there are no records of this ever happening. No other lock will fit this pattern stock. This example appears to have been set up for King’s use, with B/3 date code said to be 1838-39, surely too late to be of use to the Crown, cannot find any reference to this. Leeds pattern room have no idea and say it’s unique. London proof marks plus EIC coat of arms on barrel. Barrel maker Holden. Produced for the EIC between 1819-1839 (see Harding Vol II page 197’. The Bess measures 54 ½” overall length with a 39” round steel barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The barrel has a block fore sight and is numbered ‘RTM 145’. It has its original lock plate which is crisply marked ‘Tower’ (Enfield) together with Crown GR (George Rex) and small ‘crown/3’ inspection mark. It has its original undamaged walnut stock with brass furniture. The Bess has its original iron ramrod and sling swivels fitted with buff leather sling. The hammer is fitted with flint. The cocking and firing mechanisms work as they should. The metal work has even patina throughout. The musket comes with an original Brown Bess pattern socket bayonet. The triangular blade is 17” in length and is faintly marked by the manufacturer ‘S.Hill’ together with ‘Crown/B/13 EX’. The blade has even patina. The 3” socket is marked ‘3/85’. The bayonet fits the Brown Bess. The price for this Brown Bess worthy of further research includes UK delivery. N.B As an antique musket no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 17469:1
