VERY RARE, ONE OF 2,000, NAPOLEONIC WARS ERA, British Military Pattern 1800 / 1815 .650 Calibre Flintlock Muzzle Loading Baker Rifle Officially Adapted for Socket Bayonet With Hinged Patchbox Containing Tools. Sn 17186 - 17186

The Baker rifle (officially known as the Pattern 1800 Infantry Rifle) was a flintlock rifle used by the Rifle Regiments of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. It was the first standard-issue, British-made rifle accepted by the British armed forces. The Baker Rifle was first produced in 1800 by Ezekiel Baker, a master gunsmith from Whitechapel. The famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments adopted these accurate rifles (the hit Napoleonic War, Book & TV series Sharpe's Rifles featured this pattern of rifle). This rifle appears to have been an 1800-1810 era Baker rifle that was updated during its service life to the Pattern 1800/1815. D.W. Bailey in "British Military Longarms 1815-1865" estimates no more than 2,000 of the earlier Baker pattern rifles were converted to this pattern around 1815-1823. The barrel has a bayonet lug on the bottom for use with a socket bayonet (a distinguishing feature of the Pattern 1800/15 rifles). This excellent, very rare, original, Baker rifle has all original wood work with figured cheek piece and metal work all in excellent condition with correct brass furniture. Our example has open sights, steel ram rod, sling swivels and brass patchbox with hinged lid that contains 3 steel tools. The rifle measures 44 ½” overall with a 28 ¾” brown wash steel barrel. The bore has just staining consistent with age and use and crisp well defined rifling. The barrel has black powder proofs and correct small lug on the underside of the muzzle to accommodate socket bayonet. The hammer is fitted with flint. The action has a safety bolt and is marked with Kings Crown (George Rex) together with small inspection mark. The rifle cocks and dry fires perfectly. The price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique muzzle loading flintlock rifle no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 17186
