US Prison Shivs/Shanks.
This a very unusual lot, it is a collection of Shivs and Shanks confiscated from prisoners cells in Tennessee State Prison.
We have owned them since the early 1990's, they came from an auction in the United States, as can be seen the original auction tag is still attached, we never got round to doing anything with them and as a result they have remained in our loft since then.
I think they may have come from Tennessee State Prison near Nashville as they opened in 1898 and closed in 1992, it was around that time or year or two later that they were acquired.
They are not the prettiest looking items but are interesting in there own right and no doubt would have served the purpose they were made for. Two look to have been made from scissors, one is maybe a scrapper the other I do not know. They were held on the wood shield with thin wire which is now mostly broken but of course easily repaired. They all have some age but they are difficult to date, I think quite old as I imagine there is no way of obtaining/making such things in more modern prisons.
I am not sure I have the catalogue but think I have the recept/invoice, I am looking for both but with no success so far. I will include them IF I find them.
All in all an interesting curio.
