Unusual Victorian Gentleman’s Silver Mounted Varnished ‘Cabbage Stem’ Sword Stick Engraved ‘Souvenir De Paris Exposition 1900’ & ‘G.F. Letts West Haddon’. Sn 12271 - 12271

The Exposition Universelle of 1900 was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 15 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The fair, visited by nearly 50 million, displayed many machines, inventions, and architecture that are now nearly universally known, including the Grande Roue de Paris Ferris wheel, Russian nesting dolls, diesel engines, talking films, escalators, and the telegraphone (the first magnetic audio recorder). This is an original, unusual, souvenir of the Paris Exposition. The sword has a short 16 ¼” double edged blade with medial ridge. The blade has staining consistent with age but no damage or rust. In its scabbard the swordstick measures measures 35 ¾” overall length. The curved handle has silver ferrule (no hallmarks). The fitting is engraved ‘Souvenir De Paris Exposition 1900’ & ‘G.F. Letts West Haddon’ (most likely the name of the original Victorian owner of the sword stick). Unusually, the handle and scabbard are made from a giant cabbage stem which have the feel and appearance of lightweight wood. The handle and scabbard have a varnished finish. The scabbard near to the throat has 2 fine stable cracks which are totally secure and only visible on close inspection. The tip of the scabbard has a conical brass end cap. Price for this attractive Victorian sword stick with silver fitting celebrating the Paris Exposition of 1900 includes UK delivery. Sn 12271
