The 1st Newcastle Artillery Volunteer Corps was a unit of the Volunteer Force raised to supplement the British Army at a time of a perceived French threat in 1860. Attached to the 1st Newcastle AV were the 1st Berwick-on-Tweed Artillery Volunteers from 1863 until 1866. In addition the 2nd Northumberland Artillery Volunteers were attached during 1863 and 1864 and the 3rd Durham Artillery Volunteers from 1873 until 1890. In 1899 the Headquarters for the Corps was built. Named as the Angus Hall Drill Hall, it was constructed at Liddell Terrace, Gateshead. This is an original 1821 pattern Volunteer Artillery Officer’s sword to the 1st Newcastle Artillery Volunteers & Scabbard (see page 94 Of Swords Of The British Army by Robson & page 99 of World Swords by Withers). It has a 32 ½” blade with fullers and measures 38” overall. It has the correct fish skin grip with wire binding which is intact and tight and correct 3 bar guard hilt. The blade is etched and blued on both sides with foliate panels . One side is etched to the ‘1st Newcastle VA’ (Volunteer Artillery) together with martial arms & stylised monogram below Griffin device . The ricasso is marked on one side by the maker ‘W.W. White, Frances St, Woolwich’ and the reverse with ordnance star and inlaid roundel. The blade has staining consistent with age. The hilt is fitted with remnants of an officer’s cord. The scabbard with 2 hanging rings has no dents and just staining / patina consistent with age. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 17136:6
