    Rook rifles seem to becoming scarcer and scarcer. This particular side opening rifle utilising Tranter’s patent was made by the iconic British Gunmaker P Webley with their name and their St James St London retail address engraved on the top strap. This is unusual in itself as Webley proudly stated that “90% of the guns they made did not have their name on them”. Webley manufactured these rifles for the Army and Navy Stores, Gibbs, Jeffreys, Holland and Holland and many others. The Webley rook rifle was also widely sold by provincial retailers and market with their name.

    The rifle has Victorian proof marks. This rifle has a decent bore with strong rifling and good wood with one small chip at the front of the forend but this does not detract from the appearance as you need to look for it. There is some nice figuring in the walnut stock and no cracks or damage other than the usual dings and dents that you would expect from a rifle that was obviously put to use in the 19th Century.
    There is considerable original finish remaining but one small area of external pitting on one flat of the octagonal barrel. The rifle is in decent enough shape to make a restoration and refinish worthwhile. The rifle was made to shoot .380 long rook calibre and obsolete calibre that allows the rifle to be owned without a license as a collectible and object of curiosity.
    Overall a decent example of an English Rook and Rabbit rifle.
