George Alan 2/11/1879 – 3/1/1961 enlisted as a private in the Royal marines light infantry aged 17 at Plymouth in 1897. He served in the Boer War on HMS Monarch at Simonstown in 1901. He rose to Gunnery Sgt Major in 1911. He was at the battle of Jutland in 1916 on HMS Temeraire, mentioned in despatches (MID) and promoted to Lieutenant. He served in the Dardenelles at Imbros 1916-18 and was promoted to Captain in 1921. He retired from service in 1922 and was Chief inspector in the RM Police 1926-32 before he retired on ill health grounds and was re-called for WW2 service. He was made up to major and served at various RM barracks, depots and training camps. This is Major Allan’s Boer War, WW1 & WW2 Medal Miniatures Group With Ribbons Mounted For Wear & Edward VII 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword By Wilkinson. The medals and sword were gifted to Major Allan’s family Doctor after his death. The medal group consists of his miniature Boer war Queen’s South Africa medal, WW1 1914/15 Star, War medal, Victory medal (with Oak leaves denoting MID), WW2 Defence medal & Victory medal. All with their original ribbons mounted on a metal par with pin for wear. His pattern 1897 Infantry Officer’s sword is in very good condition. It has a 33 " single edged clean blade with fullers. The ricasso is marked by the manufacturer 'Wilkinson' (partly obscured by its original leather hilt washer which we have not attempted to remove in order to avoid damage) together with WD inspection marks. The reverse also has WD inspection marks. It has an ornate bowl guard with stylised King’s crown ER VII (Edward VII Rex) Royal Cypher and undamaged gilt wire bound fish skin grip together with stepped steel pommel. The hilt is fitted with leather cord and acorn knot. It is complete with its brown leather covered field scabbard and sword frog which has the correct straps and buckles. all leather & stitching are in tact. The set is accompanied by a page of notes dated 19th February 2019 signed by a family member of the Major Allan’s Doctor detailing the Officer’s service, antecedents and provenance of the medals & sword.
