RARE, Early Production, Pre WW1, 1909 Dated Hook Quillon 1st Type 1907 Pattern Sword Bayonet By Wilkinson To The 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment & 1st Pattern WD Scabbard With Internal Chape Marked ‘HGR09’. Sn 16126 - 16126

The Essex Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 to 1958. The regiment served in many conflicts such as the Second Boer War and both World War I and World War II, serving with distinction in all three. It was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot and the 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot. This is an excellent 1st Type, hook quillon '07' sword bayonet by Wilkinson, complete with original 1st type scabbard. These bayonets were introduced in January 1908 (see page 186 of British & Commonwealth Bayonets by Skennerton). This example was made in 1909, a year after production began. The sword bayonet has a clean 17" steel single edged blade which is stamped on the ricasso with the Kings crown ‘ER’ (Edward Rex) and '1907' (pattern) together with date '1 09' (January 1909) and 'Wilkinson' (manufacturer) It also has other inspection marks (all illustrated). On the reverse it is stamped with WD inspection marks. The bayonet is fitted with its original 1st Type hook quillon cross guard which incorporates a muzzle ring. The wood grips have just bumps and bruises to be expected and are correctly secured with two screw bolts. The pommel is stamped '2 E.X' to the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment above weapon number ‘38’ . It is complete with its original 1st Pattern leather scabbard with steel locket and internal chape. The leather is impressed with WD arrow and ‘HGR09’. All the stitching and leather of the scabbard are clean & intact. The price for this rare Regiment marked 1st Type bayonet and 1st Pattern scabbard includes UK delivery. Sn 16126
