British WD 1894 Dated, 1856 Pattern, Wilkinson London Pioneers Brass Hilt Saw Back Short Sword Sidearm. Regiment marked To The Scottish 2nd Volunteer Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. BAYO 266 - BAYO 266

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1881 until amalgamation into the Royal Regiment of Scotland on 28 March 2006. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders already had a well-earned reputation for valour in the face of the enemy, most notably the 93rd (later 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) during the Crimean War. Here, the 93rd earned the sobriquet of "The Fighting Highlanders" and carried with it the status of having been the original "Thin Red Line". This title was bestowed following the action of the 93rd at Balaklava on 25 October 1854 in which this single battalion alone stood between the undefended British Army base at Balaklava and four squadrons of charging Russian cavalry. The 93rd, under the command of Sir Colin Campbell, not only held steady, but for the first time in the history of the British Army, broke a large cavalry charge using musket fire alone, without having been formed into a square. The Regiment saw much action in the 2nd Boer War, WW1 & WW2. This is an original 1856 Pattern British Pioneers Sawback Short Sword Sidearm (see pages 260 & 261 No. 229 of Robson's Swords of the British Army). The Pioneer’s role included preparation of defensive works, construction of military structures and clearing a pathway for troops. Our example of the 1856 Pioneer sword has a broad 22 ½” long blade with deeply cut sawback ( 27 ½” overall). The blade has just light staining to be expected. The ricasso is marked by the manufacturer on one side 'Wilkinson London’ & dated ‘8/94’ (August 1894). The reverse has WD with broad arrow mark and other inspection marks. It has the correct heavy ribbed Brass handle with full knuckle bow, slotted at the base for lanyard. The guard is crisply marked with date ‘9/94’ (Sept 1894) & ‘V’ over ‘2 A&SH’ denoting use by the Scottish 2nd Volunteer Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and weapon number ‘10’. The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 266
