Description

C1850 English William Probin 16 Bore Percussion Holster Pistol For Cavalry Officers With Octagonal Barrel, Safety Catch Slide & Captive Steel Ram Rod. Sn 15055 - 15055

William Probin was a Birmingham based gunsmith recorded as having premises at 11 and 35 Loveday Street between 1821 & 1860 then for 1 year only at 87 Tower Street in 1861 (see page 312 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). This English percussion pistol made by William Probin C1850 is in very good condition. It measures 12 ¾” overall and has a browned 7 ½” octagonal steel barrel. The smooth bore is clean. The barrel has small brass post fore sight and ‘v’ notch rear sight. It has a Dolphin hammer, steel trigger guard with extended tang, steel ram rod mount and sliding safety catch feature. The pistol has its original captive steel ram rod favoured by Cavalry Officers. The action and hammer have foliate engraved decoration. The action plate is signed by the maker ‘W. Probin’. The dark walnut full stock is all original and has just the knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age. The stock has a chequered pistol grip, German Silver mounts and an inlaid German silver escutcheon at the wrist. Its action works as it should. The price for this pistol worthy of further research regarding the maker includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion pistol no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 15055
