This example is particularly rare as it was retailed by W.Kavanagh & Sons of Dublin. Winchester rifles such as this were actually relatively common in Ireland during this period and could be found in the hands of both loyalist and Republican forces in the events leading to the Easter Rising, the rising itself, the War of Independence and the Civil War. There are many anecdotes mentioning the use of these rifles in ambushes and hit and run raids where they would excel thanks to their compact size, light weight and relatively high capacity and rate of fire.
The rifle is a fantastic shooter and is very accurate, especially with .429 diameter projectiles and the barrel is in good condition with clean crisp rifling.
It retains most of its bluing on the barrel and the Winchester factory address is clean and crisp. The retailers markings are also present and remain nice and crisp as well. The rifle has been fitted with a Lyman tang sight as can be seen in the pictures.
The woodwork is in good condition, especially for its age, with the marks expected of a rifle of this vintage.
The rifle functions perfectly and is incredibly smooth for an 1892 Winchester.
