~ WW2 1937 Dated Inert German Luftwaffe B1 Incendiary Bomb ~
One of the commonest incendiary devices dropped by the Luftwaffe on Britain was the 1 kg incendiary bombs.
These cylinders of magnesium alloy with a tail section riveted to the body were filled with thermite. Incendiaries did not explode but upon impact a small percussion charge would ignite the thermite within.
The German Luftwaffe used these bombs extensively in the bombing of Warsaw, and continued with the London Blitz and the bombing of Moscow, among other cities.
This particular B1 bomb is marked variously:
It has the date of ‘1937’ stamped in two places and the WaffenAmt (a pre 1933 version) mark.
~ Dimensions ~
The tube measures 23cm (9 inches) in length with a diameter of 5cm (2 inches).
The fin has a length of 12cm (4 ¾ inches).
The bomb has an overall length of 35cm (13 ¾ inches).
It weighs 695g.
~ Condition ~
The bomb has some age wear resulting in a rough finish to the tube and paint loss/light rusting to the tail but structurally the bomb is in a great condition with no damages.
