The shell has only partially exploded, which has caused major splitting & distortion. Due to the state it is impossible to tell whether it is either a British 25 pdr or a U.S 105mm shell. Though the outer shell has warped, a large split down the centre reveals that the leaflets remain incredibly stable & well preserved. When the shell exploded it would split & the leaflets stuffed inside would be released as the shell fell; in this case the shell partially exploded but the leaflets inside remained. They are written in German which means it is an allied shell. The headline can be made out and appears to read “regeln die gefangennahme“ which translates to “regulate the capture” so it is encouraging the soldiers & population to surrender and is thus post D-Day.
An extremely rare and unique example of war time history.
~ Dimensions ~
The shell has a width of 14 inches (35.5 cm) and a depth of 3.5 inches (8.8 cm). It weighs 7.16 kg.
~ Condition ~
The shell is distorted. It failed to explode correctly, the metal is worn, rusted & damaged. The leaflets are stuck together with some loss, but stable.
~ Postage ~
UK postage is £12 or the shell can be collected in our store based in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
