    ~ WW2 Japanese General’s Ceremonial Katana Sword ~

This is a fine Second World War Japanese Admirals' katana sword with scabbard and standard Naval fittings. The blade is stamped on the tang with the anchor mark.

It comes with a perspex plaque that reads

'Presented by Air Marshall Sir John E. A. Baldwin, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., D.L., J.P. (Hon. Air Commodore no. 3506 F.C.U.) Japanese Admirals Ceremonial Sword Surrendered on the Defeat of Japan'

The sword was displayed in the Officers' Mess at R.A.F. Westwood and retained by the Station Commander when the station was closed.

This is a very good quality factory blade used for ceremonial purposes.

The blade is made in the ‘shinogi-kukuri’ pattern.

Its mune (blade back) is shaped in the 'Ihori' style and its kissaki (point) is ‘o’ (long).

The boshi (sword tip) hamon is hakikake (brushstroke).

The hamon is shaped in the ‘Sugu’ (straight) pattern and some hada (grain) in the masame (straight) pattern is visible.

The swords fittings are made of brass and copper and decorated with cherry blossom flowers.

The habaki (blade locket/ferrule) is made of gilded copper.

The copper tsuba (guard) is shaped as a rising sun.

There are four brass seppa (spacers), two on each side.

The fushi (sleeve) is made of cherry blossom flower decorated copper.

The tsuka (grip) is made of bamboo covered with black rayskin and brown coloured woven silk. The menuki (ornaments) are in the form of cherry blossom.

The saya (scabbard) is made of ray skin pattern decorated bamboo scabbard fitted with two kurikata (knob/suspension rings).

    ~ Dimensions ~

The blade length is 26 inches (66 cm) and the sword overall length is 36.2 inches (92 cm). The sword in its scabbard length is 38.2 inches (97 cm). The complete weight is 1.35 kg.

    ~ Condition ~

The blade is good condition with minor nicks, especially towards the tip.

    The hamon is clearly visible.

The woven silk is in fair used condition, but still looks decent.

All its fittings are in good condition with minor wear and minor loss of gilt.

The scabbard is lost some of its paint and developed a small crack to the lower end.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £18 or it can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
