Description

A very rare flintlock service pistol by Bumford, circa 1710. Made for the crown during the reign of Queen Anne ( 1702-1714 ) and by the design, for the sea service. The very similar design can be seen in the later Georgian sea service pistols of the Napoleonic wars. The pistol of 19 inches overall with a 12.75 inch barrel ( proof marked ) of .59 calibre. The plain walnut stock with no raised apron around the barrel tang as see in later Georgian service pistols after 1714. The brass mounts of fairly simple form with round butt cap, trigger guard that sits on the stock and ribbed ramrod pipe made from rolled brass sheet. The plain steel lock stamped "BUMFORD" and is good working order. The pistol shows ware, knocks and minor losses, which I don't think is bad after 314 years.
