Create my profile now!HW Mortimer and his son Harvey Walklate Mortimer were London gunsmiths' between 1753 and into the 1800s with premises at Fleet Street (see page 187 of British Gunmakers London By Brown). The Mortimer family made Firearms by Royal Appointment. This is an English Percussion Overcoat / Traveling Pistol by HW Mortimer with later fitted case. The pistol measures 8” overall and has a 4” octagonal steel barrel. The barrel’s smoothbore is clean. The barrel has a bead fore sight. It has a steel trigger guard with extended tang and finial, steel ramrod flutes. The action has light foliate engraved decoration and has the makers name ‘HW Mortimer’. It has its original walnut full stock which has just light bumps & bruises consistent with age and deep cut chequering and punch decoration at the grip. The pistol has an iron ram rod. It’s cocking and firing action work. The pistol comes with its later fitted wood case. The case with hinged lid has a lock (key absent). The inside of the case is fitted and lined with felt to hold the pistol and its accessories which consist of a small roll of lint, a quantity of moulded lead balls and an empty TE Mortimer labelled percussion cap tin with removable lid & a brass & copper pistol size powder flask with sprung Nozzle and American Eagle embossed decoration. The inside of the lid has a Mortimer trade label. The exterior of the case has inlaid line decoration and a mother of pearl escutcheon.
