A rare Georgian period Scottish dress dirk, the brass scabbard engraved with a family crest and motto. The crest is of an arm in armour holding a dagger and the family motto "VINCERE VEL MORT". (Latin for victory or death).
This motto is used by the McDowell or McDowall clan. The Pommel set in the top with a cairngorm stone, the scabbard made of gilt brass, retaining some original gilding and is undamaged. The dirk is complete with its matching bi-knife and fork both with matching stones inset into the top. The wooden hilt finely carved overall with basket work design and inset with tiny brass studs. Single edged blade with a scalloped back edge, showing no signs of wear. No visible makers marks. Overall length 18 inches. Very good condition. A nice rare completely untouched early piece. Ref 9178.
