Lasting six brutal weeks, from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, the Battle of the Ardennes, took place during freezing weather conditions, where 30 German divisions attacking battle-fatigued American troops across 85 miles of the densely wooded Ardennes Forest. The battle was part of the Battle of the Bulge and was a turning point in the defeat of the German Army in WW2. This is a fired American made brass cartridge case for the M1 57mm Anti-tank gun which was the British 6 pound 7 cwt modified to American measurements and a 16 inch longer barrel and was used by the soldiers of the 83rd Division in the battle. This trench art cartridge case is inscribed in French on the side ‘Souvenir De la Ardennnes Decembre 1944 – Janniere 1945’ with the name ‘Oster Joseph’ underneath. The American made cartridge case is headstamped 57mm M23A2 F.A. 1943 (1943 date) LOT 57.
